About the Presenter
Dr. Lawrence “Larry” Matthews
In 1991, while serving as pastor of a suburban Washington, DC congregation and the only clergy faculty member of Edwin Friedman’s Post-graduate Seminars in Family Emotional Process, Larry became the founder and Coordinator of Leadership In Ministry Workshops. The purpose of these residential workshops is to train clergy and lay leaders in relating Bowen Family Systems Theory (BFST) and the leadership teachings of Friedman to congregational leadership. The unique format of these residential workshops includes both large group presentations by faculty and guest speakers and small peer groups led by faculty coaches. In the small groups, where participants spend 80% of their time, focus is upon individual family of origin work (personal genograms) and ministry case studies. In both settings the emphasis is upon relating theory to practice and the theological implications of these efforts. The LIM workshops take place every spring and fall in West Virginia, Colorado Springs and Boston. There were 111 participants in 2009.
